Apple's Keynote

Have you ever used Keynote on Apple devices (iPad) for anything other than a presentation? That's always the initial thought I hear from educators when I ask "Have you used Keynote to..." Through the Apple Teacher Modules and #AppleEDUchat community, I learned that it's so much more than a presentation app!
I will be posting my experience with Apple Teacher and the Everyone Can Create initiative in a later post. In the meantime, visit Apple Education if you'd like to learn more!

Keynote Scaffolds

If you'd like to learning more about teaching with the iPad, check out this ebook on Keynote! (You will need an Apple device to download and view this free book by Jamie Clark & Lou Cimetta.)

I recently presented how to use Keynote Scaffolds at my new school with 11 other educators. I started the presentation with an understanding of technology integration and the SAMR Model.

If you would like for me to upload a video that goes over step-by-step on how to create your own Keynote Scaffold, let me know!

Student Engagement

The reason why I love using Keynote Scaffolds is the student engagement! I'm currently in a Year 4 1:1 iPad classroom and my students really do enjoy using their devices for creating their work. The scaffold acts as a digital worksheet and is organised for students to easily understand. I can add audio of me reading instructions but my students are able to go off of the typed directions on each page.

In the beginning of the year I took the time to teach the students how to use the Drawing Tool and add photos, videos, text boxes and audio. For rotations, I like to keep activities simple and somewhat similar as this allows the students to utilise their time and extend their understanding rather than relearning how to do a new scaffold each week.

My Recommendations

To implement Keynote Scaffolds in your class, I recommend the following:
  1. Take some time to become familiar with Keynote and what features you'd like your students to use.
  2. Start small! I like using a 'Find Someone Who...' activity in Keynote where they add a photo of a friend who fits the labels.
  3. Explicitly teach how you'd like your students to complete the scaffolds.
  4. Trial and error! Don't worry if it doesn't work out the first time. It's okay to learn with your students.
  5. Seek feedback from your students. Ask them what they enjoyed most, what they found difficult and suggestions they might have on how to improve your scaffolds.
