My 3 Tasks were...
- Research Ideas - I researched how SAMR was used in classes and thought about which apps to use, since I had a class set of iPads, and how they were used in classes.
- Have a Plan - My goal was to do one project of each SAMR level to see how I was utilising the model.
- Document Projects - I reflected on one of the final projects I had during the last half of the year and felt quite confident that I used the SAMR model effectively.

From Substitution
I started of the project with my focus on using the iPads and small group collaboration when working with a procedure text project. The students worked in small groups to create a project using a specific app and typed the steps to their procedure in the Notes or Pages apps. Initially, the students just substituted writing with typing.

... to Augmentation ...
Then we took the text and took each step onto one page in a BookCreator project. This functionally improved the activity as students were now making a 'Recipe Book' for apps. Students are now able to add images to assist with the explanation of their steps.
... to Modification
The students who were prepared for the next phase then recorded screencasts of them demonstrating each steps for readers to watch. At the end of the book, they uploaded a video with a completed example of their project.
Can We Get to Redefinition?
The students and I discussed ways that we could further our project to reach a wider audience and create new tasks. The students talked about how they would like to compile all the books together and that we could uploaded it to a class digital library (to the iBooks app library on our class iPads). This was done with my assistance but only as separate ePub files in the iBooks library. We would have enjoyed uploading it to a class blog and challenging other classes to create our projects.
A Class Example:
This book was created by two students and one of which did not particularly enjoy Music class. After this project he was excited to share with the Music teacher and started to talk more positively about the subject. Click the link to view the PDF. Please note that videos aren't accessible through PDF, the ePub may become available in the future.
SAMR Model: Moving within the Model
When I first started developing the plans for this project, I used a 2 x 4 table in Pages to write down ideas on how to move in the model towards the Modification and Redefinition phase as this was my focus. This was a great tool for me to use while reflecting during planning.
I often see teachers asking which app to use for each stage and the more I researched the more I understood that the app isn't the deciding factor. It's about task!
SAMR... It's not about the APP... It's about the TASK!
