I recently met with my deputy to set up a goal I'd like to set for myself. My school has a strong push for technology and I decided to focus on that area. I'm a quick learner and have a sound knowledge of technology but I want to expand on how I use it in the classroom. I want it to be meaningful and enhance our learning and not just be a substitution or filler.
What is the SAMR Model?
SAMR is a model designed to help educators infuse technology into teaching and learning, popularised by
Dr. Ruben Puentedura. It focuses on supporting and enabling teachers to design, develop, and infuse digital learning experiences that utilize technology.
How Does this Model Help?
The goal is to enhance higher levels of student achievement when using technology. It also aims to increase higher engagement among students. (I'm also hoping to grow as a teacher and push myself to do more than my comfort zone.)
S - Substitution
This is the stage that I feel most comfortable in. I can easily find an app that takes place of the pencil and paper in the classroom. (Anyone else try to limit themselves when it comes to copying?) I can substitute activities using technology but I'd like to further that substitution by thinking outside the box.
Some examples I have done in the past: Allowing a student who was reluctant at writing to type their stories on the computer. The student went from writing a maximum of 2-3 sentences to 2-3 small paragraphs.
A - Augmentation
I feel I am currently at this stage as I'm consciously trying to utilise technology to enhance learning through functionality. However, I do feel like I have more to learn and push myself.
Some examples I have done in the past: Students using online dictionaries or Google search when searching for meanings of unfamiliar words.
M - Modification
I definitely need some assistance to push myself. I've used Showbie on some assignments and it is listed as an example but I don't feel that it really is. I want to truly understand how to take a task then utilise technology that enhances the learning through redesign.
Some examples I have done in the past: Using Showbie to share files and allow students to annotate thoughts.
R - Redefinition
I love the possibilities that this stage offers. However, I'm sad to say, I haven't really tried it much. I blame my technology restraints but I feel if I push myself then that shouldn't be a major factor.
Some examples I have done in the past: I created a Keynote presentation with videos to try and upload to Seesaw to share our class project findings. (But unsuccessful with the videos working and could only upload the PDF file.)
What's Next?
- Research Ideas - I need to research examples of each stage and look into some sort of Professional Learning online to further my knowledge. I found this website, Schrock Guide, and I will be doing some reading. If you know of a website that would be helpful, please comment!
- Have a Plan - I need to come up with a plan. My goal is to do one project of each during Semester 2. I need to create a table that outlines this project and tick them off once completed.
- Document Projects - I plan to also document and reflect on each project. I'm hoping this will push me to further my knowledge and enhance the learning in my classroom.
Do you have any tips for me?
I have stumbled onto 2 apps my class ( y5s) love
ReplyDeleteNearpod - a student engagement tool where I can run an I do then We do lesson and sometimes you do as well.
Take a bit of time to set up your own lessons but I think it’s great
I also love Ed Puzzle - I can take as me any video and pause the video to check for understanding by asking questions.
Not sure if you have heard of them before or used them.
